Bryant- Presidential Pets
When I was in Maryland for the 4th of July, we drove down to D.C many times. On one occasion we went to the Lincoln Memorial, where they had a giant statue of Abraham Lincoln (which you've probably seen in the photos), The Emancipation Proclamation engraved on the walls, and on the exterior the names of the 48 continental states on the walls, with the year they became states. But in the gift shop... I saw a book that interested me... Presidential Pets by Julia Moberg.
The book had all 44 Presidents, the pet(s) they owned, and a cool rhyme to go with them. The pets include but are not limited to: George Washington's french hounds, Thomas Jefferson's grizzly bear cubs, John Quincy Adams's pet alligator (???!!!), Andrew Jackson's parrot (who cursed at Jackson's own funeral), Martin Van Buren's tiger cubs ( sent as a gift from the Sultan of Oman, eventually sent to a zoo), the turkey Abraham Lincoln pardoned on thanksgiving, First Lady Hayes's siamese cat, Teddy Roosevelt's dog, Pete (who once bit the ambassador of France), Cal Coolidge's badger (?), FDR's dog Fala (who was falsely rumored to have been left on the alaskan islands), LBJ's dogs Her and her brother Him (who liked to have his ears tugged) Bill Clinton's dog Buddy, and the first daughter's cat, Socks (bad combination), and last but not least... Barack Obama's dog Bobama. I would recommend this book to both history and animal loving kids.
